In the second case the author is showing the reader what the character is like. In other words, the author intervenes authoritatively in order to describe, and often to evaluate the motives and disporitional qualities of the characters. In the find case the author is telling the reader about the character. The author may employ direct characterization, explicitly presenting or commenting on the characters, or indirect characterization, setting forth characters thru representations of their actions, statements thoughts and feelings. Inorder for a work to be believable, the reader must find the characters convincing, inorder to find the characters convincing, the reader therefore make their characters “come alive” by describing not only such things as physical attributes, actions, conversations and their effect on other characters but also such things as thoughts and emotions. Characterisation is inextricably inertwined with plot.
